This backyard movie night birthday party was pretty simple to put together. All you need is a a good movie, yummy snacks, fun friends, and a place to set up a makeshift theater. You can find all the items I used at the bottom of this post!
Izy just turned double digits!! She wanted a backyard movie night for her birthday party this year. You can see her party last year here.
The only request she had was that we not watch a Disney cartoon movie. Um, what? When did my baby grow up so fast? Don’t get me wrong, she still loves Disney movies but she wanted a bigger kid movie with all her friends. We found it a little difficult to find a movie that was PG and not a cartoon. So we settled on one of my favorite movies growing up, Troop Beverly Hills. Remember how great Shelley Long was in that movie? But oh my goodness, I don’t remember it having so many swear words! I had to make a few apologies to parents when they picked up their kids. Opps!!
The set up for the makeshift theater was pretty simple. Take a flat sheet of some sort (I used a drop cloth like this one) and hang it to create the “movie screen”. Blow up some air mattresses and have some blankets on hand. To keep the bugs and grass clippings away, I tacked down some plastic (like this. We borrowed a projector from a friend but these ones will do the trick
Though the big theater size candy boxes are really cute, I wanted them to have lots of choices and not get a bellyache 🙂 I filled little cups with M & M’s, Skittles, Starbursts, Hot Tamales, and Gummy Bears. The kids thought it was a great idea and took one of each!
The cupcakes were a huge hit!!
The favors she passed out to all her friends at the end!
